Protect our Rights

When this site was originally conceived it was intended to be a resource for collectors and Edged Tool researchers. It was not intended to hold any Political content. Unfortunately as the result of the occasional unfortunate incident involving edged tools, we as a group keep finding ourselves under attack from pathetic small minded politicians who want to make a name for themselves as well as petty, meglomaniacal public servants who see an opportunity to get more power and control at the expense of peoples basic rights and freedoms.

None of these people give a Rats about the truth; only what they can gain. Unfortunately, too many people still readily fall for the simple con line that whatever is proposed will make us all safer. If not stopped, eventually the right to collect will be taken away from us.

It is the responsibility of every collector to protect our rights by not only being a responsible edged tool owner, but to take some positive step towards protecting our interest as well.

Right now, politicians are looking for a whipping boy. They need scapegoats to take the spotlight off their own ineptitude, and will never miss an opportunity to try and make some political capital out of edged tool collectors. Tougher laws on anything wont solve a problem unless someone has stopped to find out if the existing laws were deficient or even given consideration as to what the new laws will prevent. But perhaps I should realise that you can not bring common sense and logic into a discussion when politicians are on a righteous crusade.

You only have to look at what has happened to firearms owners in this country. Thousands of law abiding gun owners were dispossesed and treated like criminals. Restricted access to firearms and increased annual fees mean that every law abiding firearms owner is fined heavily every year for crimes they never committed. It is evident from daily news reports that all of these tough misguided laws have achieved nothing because criminals still have access to whatever they want and gun down and murder each other with frightening frequency. Do the edged tool collectors want to wind up being treated the same way?

All edged tool owners should write to their local Members of Parliament and insist that the only new laws we need, if any, are those that punish the criminal use of an edged weapon. Make your letter no more than one page, it needs to be brief and to the point. Politicians receive a lot of mail and don't read the long ones. Make your letter polite. Politicians get enough angry threatening letters on other issues and such letters alienate them immediately.

Get involved with your local Member. Join a political party and be be prepared to work hard to responsibly change their policies. You could even join Labor or the Liberals if you felt you were up to the challenge. There are several other parties that have a more enlightened view towards controlling crime, without victimising the innocent. Among them are the Liberal Democratic Party and the Shooters and Fishers Party.

Write letters to the editor of your local newspapers. Again make them short, polite and to the point.

Find out if there are any local clubs that cater for collectors and join it.

This linked page displays some of the letters that I have written recently. Please feel free to use them as a guide for yourself. Copying word for word is not a good idea. If more than one letter arrives with the same recipient then it makes them look like a form letter. Try and put it in your own words.

My thoughts on the aftermath of the 2010 federal election and lessons that the Major parties should have learnt.

I believe Tony Abbotts failure to win the 2010 election has much to do with the Howard legacy and the alienation of hundreds of thousands of Liberal party voters with the Great Gun Grab when Howard decided to punish the law abiding gun owners of Australia because it suited his own personal ideology.

This should serve as a warning to politicians that betraying the trust of the people by becoming involved in populist knee jerk politics will only get them short term media gains for a long term loss of core voters.
