Smatchets made in the USA

Capt. William E. Fairbairn visited the USA during World War II and his influence resulted in the OSS adopting their own version of the smatchet. The OSS smatchets are also sterile and were made by Case.

Smatchets made in the USA by Case vary in the grips. There are two known grip patterns. The main one is a wooden grip with a Mazac pommel. This is similar to the British smatchets but the scales are held on with two large rivets where the British smatchet usually have 5 smaller pins holding the scales in place. The second grip style is a large black plastic grip the same as that on the Case V44.

I have no information about USA made smatchets being used by Australian forces during WW2. I have included this entry to dispel any confusion about the USA and Britsh made smatchets.

(I gratefully acknowledge the previous research by Bill Walters for the information on the Case smatchets from his excellent publication US and Allied Military Knives World War II Book II.)
